Dominican friar Fr. Ivan Attard gave an impassioned speech on social justice at a conference on Friday, arguing against the capitalist economic system for a system that more fairly compensates workers.

In a conference organized by the PN deputy Ivan Bartolo entitled “To live or to exist? “, Father Ivan Attard gave a passionate speech on social justice and precarious work.

“We have an economic system that doesn’t work, not because the rich are greedy but because the system is unfair,” Fr. Attard said.

Father Attard said the market price should not dictate wages. Instead, wages should depend on worker contribution.

He said outsourcing jobs and importing foreign workers to cut wages is unfair, not only among foreigners but also among Maltese.

“What the employee contributes should dictate salaries. Business ideas remain just ideas without input from the workers, Fr. Attard said.

“It’s comfortable to rely on benefits and charity. The injustice remains, however. Why are there homeless people? There is something wrong,” he continued.

“How is it possible that we work all day and can’t make ends meet.”

He asked why workers are seen as a cost and not a contribution, while CEOs are only seen as a value.

Father Attard then mentioned the case of an individual who needed an MRI but only got an appointment after two years. Eventually, after talking to someone more senior, he managed to get a quick appointment. He pointed out that was not fair.

“We need a paradigm shift in justice assistance,” concluded Father Attard.
